We’re not fans of getting political, especially when hiking, but the naming of this mountain is rooted in politics. Mt. Democrat (elevation 14,148 ft) was originally known as Buckskin Peak, after the rowdy Buckskin Joe mining camp that was located near Fairplay. During the Civil War, a suggested name change to Republic Mountain was made in honor of then recently elected U.S. Republican President Abraham Lincoln. However, this idea was quickly thwarted by the rebellious southern miners who hated that nearby Mt. Lincoln was already named after him, and as a statement of political protest, changed the name to Mt. Democrat. Phew…politics aside, we love that this mountain can be climbed on its own or in combination with the famed quad set of mountains (Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln and Bross). Celebrate your summit with the Mt. Democrat trucker hat!
